KK Blog Post 3 -- Compare Night Women to New York Day Women. What new opportunities do women have in the US vs. Haiti? What experiences are similar in both stories/places? What does this suggest about gender roles? 500 words.
They stories of Night women and New York day women have some similarities but at the same time they have many differences as well. The main similarity is that it is a middle aged women trying to support the family she has left. In Night women she was working for her son while in new york day women it was for the mother. This also has some differences like what they do for work. In Night Women she has a low paying job and in New York Day Women she has a higher paying job and also has a college degree. One more similarity between the two stories is that one of the characters in each story is hiding something from the other character. In Night women the Mother is hiding that she is a prostitute by lying and telling him that the men at night are angels that come to visit and in New York Day Women the mother is hiding that she is a nanny from her daughter, then at the same time she is also hiding herself a shame which is shown when she tells her that she doesn't go to the parent teacher meetings because she already knows that the daughter is perfect. The real reason is that she is ashamed that she has no education and she does not have nice or fancy clothing. Then the main difference between the two stories is that Night Women takes place in Haiti while New York Day Women takes place in New york. In New York Day Women which takes place in the US women are allowed to go to college and get degrees while in Night Women which is in Haiti women have much less freedom and cant get a college education. In the US women are able to get higher paying and steadier jobs than women in Haiti can which is because women in the US can get college degrees whereas in Haiti they cant. Women do still have some of the same opportunities in both Haiti and in the US. They are able to at least work in both countries but it is lower paying in haiti. This goes into the idea of the gender role in both countries and how it is different. In the US women are allowed to have a more active role in the economy with education and good jobs. While in haiti there role is greatly reduced because they are only able to get lower paying jobs and in most cases stay at home to raise the children which is different because women can get actual jobs.
