Part one -- In Act 3 Scene 1 who is really responsible for Mercutio’s death: Mercutio, who provoked the fight, Tybalt who stabbed him, or Romeo who got between them? Use specific evidence (direct quotes) from the play to back this up.
In act 3 scene 1 I feel that it is all three of their faults for Mercutio's death. I feel that it is partly Mercutio's fault because he is the one who started the fight. He says this to Tybalt "Tybalt, you rat-catcher, will you walk?". When Mercutio calls Tybalt a rat-catcher it means that he is making fun of him and provoking him to fight. Then when he asks will you walk he is asking Tybalt to fight. This is why I feel that it is part Mercutios fault because he wouldn't have died if he didn't start the fight. Then I think that it is partly Tybalts fault because, well he is the one who stabbed him. If Tybalt didn't stab him then he wouldn't have died. Obviously he wouldn't have died if Tybalt never stabbed him. Lastly I feel that it is partly Romeos fault because if he just fought Tybalt then Mercutio would still be alive, but because he didn't Mercutio had to. Then also if Romeo didn't stop and pull Mercutio away from killing Tybalt then Tybalt would be dead and Mercutio wouldn't have been stabbed. Romeo says to Mercutio and Tybalt as he pulls Mercutio away from Tybalt "The prince expressly hath Forbidden bandying in Verona streets. Hold, Tybalt! good Mercutio!". Romeo says this because the Prince said that the next time he found them fighting they would be put to death so he try to stop Mercutio from killing Tybalt. This then makes Mercutio exposed and Tybalt takes his opportunity and stabs Mercutio. If Romeo had just let Mercutio kill Tybalt then Mercutio would still be alive and Tybalt would be dead. These are why I feel that all three of them are at fault for Mercutio dying.
Part two -- How would you stage this as a director? Be specific.
If I was the director and was doing this scene I would have made it similar to how it was staged in the movie. I would make the fight take place in actual streets instead of having at the beach, because I don't think they fought on the beach in the actual play. Second I would change they way Tybalt killed Mercutio. I would have Tybalt grab a dagger he had hidden at his ankle and stabbed him with that instead. I would have there be adrenaline pumping music playing quietly in the background while they were fighting. Then as Mercutio is dying there would be more sad music. Then for lighting I would have it be bright at the beginning of the fight but as the fight goes on have the light get darker, and when Tybalt stabs Mercutio I would have it be dark as if a cloud is blocking out the sun. There would be storm clouds coming in as Mercutio is dying and when he dies it starts raining. There would be a light breeze that picks up during the fight then as mercutio is dying it would become very windy. These would symbolize that he died and that during the fight something bad was going to happen at the end of the fight. For props I would have them start with Guns but they get rid of them and start fighting with fist, until Tybalt pulls out the dagger and stabs him. There would be no people around.
